Jesus Died to Free Us From the Slavery of Our Sins
John to the seven churches that are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Rev 1:4-6)
Saints throughout the world remember Jesus today. We reflect on his faithful witness to the love, holiness, and gracious intercession of God. We rejoice in the fact that he is the firstborn of the dead, never to die again (Rom 6:9). We proclaim his sovereignty as King of all kings and Lord of all lords. He is the resurrected way, truth, and life provided by the One who is and who was and who is to come.
Use Revelation 1:4-6 as a means of remembering the sobering past on this Lord's day: God's own Son died on a Roman cross for you.
Use Revelation 1:4-6 to reflect on the renewed present made graciously available to you on this Lord's day: God's own Son died so that you could hear from the throne room of heaven itself, "Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come."
Use Revelation 1:4-6 to set your mind on the call to holiness for this week: God's own Son died to free you from your sins by his blood.
Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? (Rom 6:1-2)
Use Revelation 1:4-6 to focus your heart on your King's commission for the rest of your life: we have been made a kingdom, priests to God.
You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Pet 2:9)
To him who loves us, has freed us, and remade us be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
