Trust in God is Hard
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. ” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
We live in a world where we are easily let down. We experience on a regular basis changes in circumstance such that it is often difficult for us to predict what our schedule might look like tomorrow. That makes it hard enough for us to execute our plans, let alone us being able to trust another to fulfill a commitment.
We also live in a world full of ‘experts’ that far too often act as expert guessers and estimators. We see committees of health professionals change their recommendations regularly. Researchers discover new truths daily. Engineers from MIT design things that fail. Trust is hard.
Trust requires faith. Trust is not knowing the exact environment, timing, and variables involved in activity. We often trust people to do things when we know they can’t fail. Have you ever found yourself doing the hardest parts of an activity and leaving to someone else the part they just can’t mess up?
Therefore, when we are told to “trust in the LORD with all [our] hearts”, we should not underestimate that task. Trusting in God requires us to set aside our demand for control and be okay with the fact that we don’t know the details. We have to believe that God is exceptional, and unlike anyone we may encounter on Earth, he knows more and is more capable. If we can do that, and in all our ways acknowledge him, he will reveal a straighter, more true path to victory.
