Do You Believe You Can Never Die?
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26 (ESV)
People often wonder about what comes next after this life. These questions come about as we age, as others do, or as life ends tragically for those we know. Such consideration is important and I believe is a large part of the reason we die in the first place — we should be prepared for death.
But whether or not you are in Christ will significantly alter your understanding of that preparedness. If you are outside of Christ you are in fact preparing for death, but those in Christ are preparing for true life.
Jesus spoke of this to Martha as she mourned the loss of Lazarus. Jesus assured her that those who believe in Him live after death and truly never die. He was telling her this not just at an opportune time to teach, but because He was comforting her. He then asks her directly, “Do you believe this?”.
That is a question we all have to answer. For those who do, our perspective on life should be different. While we can certainly mourn for those we lose in Christ, we should be comforted in knowing that through God’s grace we’ll see them again and that our own death will not be death at all.
